Coil Breakdown Guidelines for High Strength Steel

This is only for customers that give scrap credit.

Purpose:
This program was implemented at the request of the Sales and Purchasing Departments to ensure compliance with vendor requirements and to avoid additional charges.

Policy:

  • Weight Limit:
    • Coils made of High Strength Steel that exceed 8,000 lbs. must be broken down before being shipped to vendors.
    • The Portage Plant has a higher maximum limit of 10,000 lbs. for this material.

Reason for the Limit:
Vendors are unable to handle coils over their weight limit. When coils exceed this limit, vendors hire third-party contractors to cut the coils down with plasma cutter, resulting in extra charges billed to Precision Strip.

Default Change Notice:

  • The default weight limit for these coils was increased from 5,000 lbs. to 8,000 lbs. on November 14, 2024.

Per purchasing. if the scrapped material is over 5,000#, it can not be thrown in the hopper and must be arranged to be shipped to the vendor on a flatbed truck.

Pricing and Purchase Orders:

For direction on pricing or how to set up a work order, please contact Erik Grey in sales or the sales department.

For IT use only: The max weight limits are managed in Choice Field 954 HighStrength Scrap Maximum Wt. IT can only adjust the maximum weights from approval of Dale Wolters in Purchasing as he must check with the scrap vendors.
